O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her parents in Wheaton within Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured in several commercials prior to making the move to Los Angeles in 1986. Her career O'Grady started her career as a the model of Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She debuted on screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was later cast in a recurring role in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition to guest-starring on different shows and appearing in independent and TV-produced films, she also appeared as a star of several TV programs. Her debut role on television was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary for ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 to 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in the Drama Series. Barone was a cast member of Carol & Company, starring with Carol Burnett in the early 1990s.
