O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high-school student. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for the performance. O'Neil received praise of high quality from her judges. She was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed into the bottom three and the bottom two spots and bottom two, respectively. Judges were horrified by this, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he never fell into the third place. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil received a phone call immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
